Aarhus Vand wanted to expand and modernize one of their WWTPs to attain greater energy utilization at the plant and achieve a 150 % net energy production.
As part of their energy- and CO2 reduction strategy Aarhus Vand (the water company in the municipality of Aarhus) had an ambition to expand and modernize one of their wastewater treatment plants to attain greater energy utilization at the plant and achieve a 150 % net energy production.
To ensure an innovative approach to the task Smith was hired to rethink the procurement process. In order to foster ideation, and support the participation of companies who do not normally work within the water treatment industry, Smith successfully planned and facilitated an open idea competition that led to more than 60 entries from a diverse set of international participants.
The result was a long list of innovative ideas and approaches on how to treat and utilize wastewater, giving the final construction team a qualified basis for achieving the goals formulated by Aarhus Vand.
