- Giv legitimacy to desirable futures

The way you talk about a problem determines what you can do about it. So if you want to explore new avenues, you need new frameworks of understanding.

Smith helps to clarify and, more importantly, challenge common assumptions. We suggest alternative perspectives for understanding a challenge, preferring to provide a starting point rather than a definitive answer. It's more like planting a seed than delivering a package.

We're not afraid to borrow concepts and perspectives from other contexts and making them applicable to issues in the built environment. By dressing concepts in new clothes and wording, we introduce frameworks of understanding that foster a common understanding of the challenge across disciplines.

We articulate and give legitimacy to a desirable future which, by its very nature, cannot yet be fully described. Systemic change doesn't happen by describing the new and unknown in existing language alone. We need to introduce new concepts and change the format.
